When Francis' parents had been married for a short time, Francis' mother found out that her husband was being unfaithful. Distressed, she went to her father and asked if she should leave him. Her father told her, "Does he beat you? Does he give you money? If he gives you money and doesn't beat you, then stay with him." 60 years later, when Francis' Mom had Alzheimers, she would bring up that story over and over again. Obviously, she had never resolved the troubling choice she had made.
